My Research Project...Notes

Finally i decided a project of looking at current Disney films and how women are presented, whether or not it is post modern! I chose to look at Disney's 'The Princess and the Frog' and 'Kim Possible'

I really enjoyed the whole research process of this project as Disney is something I grew up around and I managed to find out a lot from this! I enjoyed reading all the critics and breaking down the film. I even enjoyed researching about gender stereotypes and traits!
After deciding to change project topic i became very interested in the impact of body image on children through barbie/ Disney dolls when I caught a glimpse of them in my sisters bedroom. I found some shocking comparisons which I thought were rather interesting when looking at their appearance and body shape.
Here I noticed how tanned Barbie is compared to a Disney doll, and also how much slimmer the Barbie doll is. The makeup is equally as ful on in these dolls!

I then noticed the difference in the clothing these dolls wear. Disney doll is more covered up, long dresses et.c, whereas Barbie has very short more revealing clothes. Not something I feel should be demonstrating as a role model for childrens dress code. Something more for a teenager,or young women going to a night club.

I was quite shocked at the amount of makeup up Barbie has compared to most of the Disney dolls. Disney dolls have a more subtle amount of makeup. Barbie also seems to have a look thats very much like plastic surgery - the lips- plump!

After a lot more researchh, comparing childrens books, programmes e.t.c, i decided again there was too much already said about Barbie so I wanted to do something different. I decided to break it down and look at just disney. Representation of women within them.

Research project process

I started off by looking at doing my research project on size zero. As I thought it linked with my specialist area of fashion and it was something i felt had a powerful impact on society. I found out alot of interesting stuff that I never knew before, such as, how some designers won't let celebrities who are size 12 wear their designs as they think that they are too big and wil ruin their chances of promoting the garment well! I found this quite shocking. However, at the same time alot of stuff I was reading about I already knew as it has already been written about widely. This is why eventually I decided this area wouldn't allow me to go into much depth and find something to write about that hadn't already been said.

I am quite worried, yet excited about doing my own research project. I feel it is a chance for me to look deep into subjects I am interested in to broaden my knowledge. Hopefully it will be challenging.
